A Santa Barbara City College student fell from a balcony over a cliff in Isla Vista late Friday night and was transported to the hospital.

The Santa Barbara County Public Safety Dispatch Center received the report of the cliff fall in the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive.

According to a press release sent by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, several people reported that the woman fell from the balcony and landed in the water. The press release said one witness said the 20-year-old student was sitting on the balcony and fell backward over the cliff.

Sheriff’s deputies, UCSB officers, Santa Barbara County Firefighters and American Medical Response paramedics responded to the scene.

The release said emergency responders found the student on a kelp bed.

She was taken to the hospital with injuries, but the extent of those injuries are unknown.

The Sheriff’s Office press release said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.
