Arroyo Grande considers declaring a homeless shelter crisis

The Arroyo Grande City Council will consider a resolution Tuesday to declare a homeless shelter crisis.

Several cities in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties already declared this type of crisis. Leaders in both counties say there isn’t enough shelter space to accommodate all of the people in need, especially homeless teenagers.

By declaring a crisis, counties and cities can become eligible to receive grant money from a state program. That funding could then be used to increase the amount of resources for homeless programs.

Local governments have until the end of the year to declare a crisis.
