The Central Coast Aquarium in Avila Beach is giving preschoolers a personal look at life under the sea with this year’s program, Mommies and Guppies.

The program’s goal is to engage young children with sea life and inspire future marine scientists. It takes place on the first Monday of every month through May from 10 a.m to noon, during which the aquarium is closed to the public so that the children and adults can have an in-depth experience with the animals.

Taylor Starkie, a former staff member at the aquarium and founder of Mommies and Guppies says, “I created
this program as a way to provide children and their parents or caregivers an opportunity to engage
in stimulating marine science activities by getting up close and personal with marine life. Now that
I’ve become a parent myself, I’ll be able to attend this unique program to share my passion for
marine science with my own child.”

Despite its name, the program is also welcoming fathers, grandparents, and caregivers of children five years old and younger. The program costs $6 a session.
