On Tuesday, the Pismo Beach Planning Commission unanimously approved plans for a renovation of the restaurant at Cuyama Avenue and Shell Beach Road. The location was most recently the site of the Speedy Gourmet drive-thru, but the restaurant has been vacant for some time.

Community Development Director Jeff Winklepleck said that the owner plans to redesign the building with a Mediterranean theme. The former drive-thru area will be converted into outdoor seating. The total indoor and outdoor space spans 825 square feet.

The Planning Commission also approved a pizza oven inside. Winkepleck said that the restaurant will serve alcohol.

The renovation does not need to go before the Pismo Beach City Council, though the project still needs a building permit.

Construction is expected to begin later this year or early next year.
