Santa Maria residents may see police officers sporting beards through the month of November. The department has decided to participate in No Shave November in order to raise funds for colon cancer research.

At the end of November, participating officers will compete for the title of “Best Beard,” “Best Mustache,” and “Best Goatee.” The winner will have their name and photo placed on a plaque that’s mounted in the Santa Maria Police Department training room, which is used for community and training events.

Through the month of October, Santa Maria police partnered with Mission Hope Cancer Center to raise money for breast cancer research. Officers wore specially designed breast cancer awareness pins on their uniforms. The pins were sold to the community, raising up to $10,000.

All the proceeds go to Mission Hope and Marian Regional Medical Center for breast cancer research and support.
