Whale expected to be buried at Oceano Sunday

Posted

A whale that washed ashore at the Oceano Dunes will be buried in Oceano Sunday.

Researchers said they are spending Saturday collecting the last of the samples they need to determine how the whale died.

When the 31-foot-whale washed on shore Thursday,  it had several shark bite marks across its body. Dozens of onlookers came to take photos of it.

Researchers believe the whale was a sub-adult when it died. They are using markings, coloration, bruising and bite marks to determine the cause of its death.

They will not have results from their samples for several weeks but said once they are done collecting them, the city will be free to bury the whale at the dunes.
