San Luis Obispo County Public Health is warning people to avoid going into the ocean following the recent rain.

In a press release issued Wednesday, the department said people should avoid coming into contact with the water for at least three days following a significant rainstorm event.

Runoff from the rain can end up in the ocean, and health experts say it can carry disease-causing bacteria and other organisms. This can cause skin, respiratory, and intestinal problems, according to the department. The very young and elderly are, particularly at risk.

Surfers and others should try to avoid ocean water during this period, especially in areas close to creeks, rivers, and storm drains.
