Santa Barbara County has scheduled community informational meetings for the south coast in the coming weeks to help neighbors better prepare for winter weather.

A meeting will be held Wednesday, December 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building in Carpinteria. A second meeting is planned for Wednesday, December 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Montecito Union School.

Santa Barbara County said in a news release that the meetings will update the community on their risk for debris flows and future evacuation scenarios.

In December 2017, the Thomas Fire scorched hillsides above Montecito. An unprecedented storm on January 9 gave way to a landslide that sent tons of debris into Montecito. 21 people died, and two people are still missing. The risk of flooding and mudslides can linger years after a fire.

Santa Barbara County is also reminding residents to register for Aware and Prepare alerts.
