Cal Poly San Luis Obispo says it still plans to downsize the number of new students in future years.

The university finalized its census numbers last week. 4,398 new, first-time students enrolled at Cal Poly in Fall 2018. Administrators projected 4,486 new, first-time students.

Cal Poly plans to reduce enrollment numbers in the year 2020 back to 2016 numbers. The decision comes after more students than expected accepted admissions offers in 2017, according to media relations director Matt Lazier.

In 2017, Cal Poly accepted 5,253 new, first-time students. The university predicted that only 4,451 students would actually accept Cal Poly’s admissions offer.

Total enrollment at Cal Poly, which includes all undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and graduate students, stands at 21,812 for the Fall 2018 semester. That is lower than the Fall 2017 enrollment, which was 22,188 students.
