A new Emergency Services Manager will join San Luis Obispo County on January 7.

County leaders announced Thursday that Joseph “Joe” Guzzardi had been appointed to the position.

He has about 20 years of emergency management experience. He served as Emergency manager for the Santa Clara Fire District since 2015. Before that, he served as the Emergency Manager for the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Services.

“We are very excited to welcome an experienced leader among California emergency managers to the County team,” said Guy Savage, Assistant County Administrative Officer.

In his new role, he will be in charge of managing about six staff members, as well as a $1.9 million budget.

The county says he will also play an important role as Diablo Canyon Power Plant prepares to close by 2025. Guzzardi will be responsible for nuclear power plant exercises and drills.

Guzzardi is taking the place of Ron Alsop, who recently retired after working for the county for 28 years.
