A teenager is dead following a shooting in Lompoc.

Police tell KSBY a 17-year-old girl who they call an “innocent bystander”  was killed in a shooting in an alley near Ocean Avenue apartments Monday night during what’s believed to be a gang-related shooting.

Police say a known gang member was walking in the alley around 7:40 p.m. when a vehicle pulled up and opened fire.

Police say the gang member was struck in the leg and then ran between the apartments.

A 17-year-old girl was babysitting at the time and stepped out of her apartment when police say she was struck and killed by a bullet being fired at the gang member, who police say was not associated with the teen.

Police say the shooter fled from the scene in a vehicle. The person he was shooting at was hospitalized. An update on his condition was not immediately known.

Officers were canvassing the scene near Ocean Avenue and North N Street collecting evidence ahead of Tuesday’s predicted storm.

Police say they have no information on the shooter.

The girl has not been identified.
