Sheared hydrant shuts off water to part of downtown San Luis Obispo

A sheared hydrant had prompted the shut-off of water to some homes in downtown San Luis Obispo.

San Luis Obispo City Fire Battalion Chief Neal Berryman says firefighters received a call about the spouting hydrant at the corner of Broad St. near the Mission just before 6:30 Friday morning.

It’s unclear what caused the hydrant to burst or if a driver may have hit the hydrant.

San Luis Obispo police also responded to the scene.

Chief Berryman says it is taking crews longer to stop the water leak because the hydrant’s valve was stripped in the incident.

City water crews have shut off the water supply to the neighborhood, according to Berryman. City water officials could not be reached for comment on the situation.
