The City of Grover Beach Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating Arbor Day by planting a handful of trees in the community.

On Friday, the city was joined by the Five Cities Fire Authority, Cal Poly Loggers, California State Parks, and other local organizations to commemorate the holiday.

Children were able to enjoy a number of activities as volunteers planted the trees at the 16th Street Park.

The department hopes the event inspires others to remember how important trees are locally and around the world.

“Trees provide some shade, they provide great opportunities for people to enjoy the park. Actually, there is a proclamation of all this great stuff, but it provides oxygen for us to breathe, provides shade, provides things for people to climb, and also helps for the birds and the animals,” said Grover Beach Mayor Jeff Lee.

Arbor Day is a holiday celebrated in the spring as a way to encourage people to plant and care for trees.
