Base officials say the missile was launched just after 2:40 a.m. The launch window opened at 1:16 a.m.

Air Force Global Strike Command says the launch is a test to determine the weapon system’s effectiveness, readiness, and accuracy.

These test launches typically take place about once a quarter and are scheduled years in advance.
The most recent Minuteman III launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base was in February.
