The 76th annual Santa Maria Elks Rodeo kicked off Thursday.
The event, which includes the Western Marketplace, Rodeo Parade, and Mariachis and Margaritas events, runs through the weekend.
Participants are competing to earn enough points to make it to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas this December.
The rodeo is hosting a breakaway roping event for the first time in its history.
