SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Jennifer Siebel Newsom sees her role as the wife and political partner of California Gov. Gavin Newsom as an opportunity to advocate for equal pay for women and family-friendly workplace policies.

She hopes to launch an effort this fall exploring the negative effects of media and technology on children, one that could clash with Hollywood and Silicon Valley. Siebel Newsom is so far offering few details.

She's not going by the traditional title of first lady and instead prefers the term "first partner."

Siebel Newsom says it's more gender inclusive and can apply to the spouses of future governors regardless of gender.

Siebel Newsom is bringing her experience as a documentary filmmaker exploring gender to the Capitol.

She says her focus on cultural change complements her husband's policy change efforts.
