The governor of California is reacting to the Supreme Court's rejection of President Donald Trump's push to shut down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

DACA has allowed nearly 800,000 young people, known as "Dreamers," to avoid deportation and remain in the U.S.

According to government statistics, California has the highest number of Dreamers with nearly 223,000 DACA recipients in the state.

Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement following the high court's ruling: "Today’s decision is an important victory, for now, for the hundreds of thousands of Dreamers -- including over 200,000 Californians -- who contribute deeply to their communities each day. They are our neighbors, our coworkers and our friends, and in California, we will continue to have their backs."

Newsom is also calling for a permanent solution for undocumented Californians that goes beyond a pathway to citizenship. The governor said the ruling is a reminder of society's ongoing confrontation with systemic racism and injustice.
