A pet bird who found its way into the Santa Barbara County Jailhas been reunited with its owners.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office says the cockatiel's owners reached out to them Wednesday after hearing about their missing pet through local media.

KSBY first reported about the escaped bird earlier this week.

"The bird's owners were devastated, especially their 9-year-old son Mohammad, who considered the bird his personal pet," the sheriff's office said in a press release.

The bird, named Sammy, was reunited with his tearful but happy family Thursday afternoon at the jail in Santa Barbara.

Officials say the bird escaped from an open window at its home near the jail. The family was able to provide information that confirmed the bird was theirs.

Staff at the sheriff's office was fostering the bird until the owners were found.
