The South San Luis Obispo County Veterans of Foreign Wars held a pancake breakfast for the community Saturday morning in honor of D-Day.

All-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice and coffee were served. The event cost eight dollars for adults, five dollars for kids aged five to 12 and was free for children under the age of five.

"We think about the greatest generation, all of their sacrifices, the thousands of men that died during that day," Quarter Master Hernan Rodriguez said. "Obviously it's kind of a solemn day. We just went through Memorial Day, but we think about their sacrifices and all the people and men and women who didn't come back."

All proceeds from the event will go toward supporting veterans and their families, as well as repairing the Veterans Hall in Nipomo. The nonprofit organization seeks to help veterans and their families through outreach programs, scholarships and transit day passes.

Even though today marks a solemn day in history, Rodriguez says it is important to remember those who sacrificed everything for the country.
