79 out of 115 new COVID-19 cases in SLO County are at California Men's Colony

San Luis Obispo County reported 115 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the county's total to 2,439 confirmed cases as of August 14.

The Public Health Department says 79 of those new cases are at the California Men's Colony (CMC) in San Luis Obispo. A total of 221 inmates at the prison have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation; 208 of those cases were reported in the past 14 days.

Public Health officials say they are working with CMC leadership to manage the outbreak at that facility. They say cases at CMC are not included when calculating the state's reopening metrics.

In San Luis Obispo County, 22 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, including five patients who are in the ICU.

Another 417 people are recovering at home and 1,980 people have recovered.

San Luis Obispo County has had 18 deaths attributed to COVID-19. One additional death is under investigation.

COVID-19 tests are currently available to the public in Grover Beach, San Luis Obispo, and Atascadero.

The testing clinic in Atascadero will be open through August 20.

The location of one case is listed as "under investigation," and another eleven are listed as "other," which includes communities with fewer than five cases. The Public Health Department is not identifying those locations.
