A Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student has tested positive for COVID-19.

The student did not live on campus and the school was notified Tuesday of the result.

The out-of-area student left San Luis Obispo for their permanent home residence, outside of the San Luis Obispo area, on March 17, 2020.

San Luis Obispo County Public Health has been informed and is conducting a contact investigation. They are also working to inform and provide guidance to all close contacts of the individual.

Cal Poly's campus remains open for essential functions and services to support students, such as student housing and dining, but recommends students return to their permanent home residence, if possible.

The school also asks those who have left the San Luis Obispo area not to return at this time.

There are currently 42 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in San Luis Obispo County.
