Community members held a surprise welcome home parade for a Santa Maria man who survived COVID-19.

James Zepeda was admitted to the ICU and put on a ventilator on March 23rd.

On top of COVID-19, he battled sepsis and septic shock, pneumonia and a stroke.

After six weeks, he is finally home and feeling better.

Family and friends decorated their cars and made signs with welcoming messages for James.

His family says the surprise parade was a success.

"I think it was just a blessing of God and all the people that prayed for me and I guess it wasn't my time to go I guess and I hope that I can be a better person from this experience and help other people that may need help," Zepeda said.

His family members living in San Diego and Indiana came to Santa Maria to take care of him.

He will be 77 years old next month.
