A Santa Maria farm is making fresh produce readily available to some on the Central Coast, even making free home deliveries to those at higher risk of contracting COVID-19.
On Wednesday, Omar Guevara and Renee Bean of Rancho la Familia set up a social distancing-conscious farm stand in Los Alamos to offer their produce to the community, and the demand was there.
"I thought it was a small town but I didn't know that the need was that extreme and seeing that we are really excited to keep coming every week," Bean said.
Community members said they are glad to support a local business and be able to get their hands on some healthy greens.
"Been trying grocery stores. There is nothing out there. These people apparently got ahold of family members and came out for us today. We all got to help each other and come together," said Jim Heter, Los Alamos resident.
While many did wait in line, six feet away from each other, to have their pickings at the veggies and fruits, Rancho la Familia is also taking pre-orders for pick up and even making free home deliveries to those who are immunocompromised or over the age of 65.
"Everyone seems to be hoarding and stocking up. We want people just to buy what they need for the week. We will be here next week. We will have food. There is plenty of food. Don't worry, don't panic, we got you," Bean said.
Even then, Guevara said he was surprised by the turnout despite the stand only being an idea as of Tuesday afternoon.
"I knew people needed their food. Obviously everyone needs their food, but I was surprised and am glad things turned out well," Guevara said.
Rancho la Familia says that after Wednesday's response they are in the process of figuring out what days and times work best in the coming weeks. To keep up to date with Rancho la Familia, click here.
