San Luis Obispo County Public Health officials are asking people who don't have symptoms or who haven't been exposed to COVID-19 to avoid making an appointment for a COVID-19 test at one of the free community testing sites.

With the Thanksgiving holiday just a week away, those testing sites are reportedly booked up and no longer have same-day or next-day appointments available.

People who are asymptomatic but what to get tested prior to Thanksgiving are instead encouraged to take an at-home self-swab test.

"Likewise, if you have symptoms and cannot make a same-day or next-day appointment at one of our free clinics, please call your local urgent care or primary care physician, or consider self-swabbing via an at-home test kit," said Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer.

Links to at-home self-swab tests can be found at www.emergencyslo.org/testing.

At-home COVID-19 test kits are also available at certain local Vons and Albertsons locations.
