SLO County reports 9 new cases of COVID-19

San Luis Obispo County reported nine new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the county's total to 2,571 confirmed cases as of August 18.

It's the lowest single-day total since just three cases were reported on June 21.

Twenty people are hospitalized, including five patients who are in the ICU.

Another 430 people are recovering at home and 2,095 people have recovered.

San Luis Obispo County has had 19 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

For the first time on Tuesday, the County Public Health Department released additional demographic data about the county's positive cases.

The top three occupations among those who've tested positive are listed as retired or unemployed (531 cases); construction workers, craftsman, and other skilled labor (386 cases); and education and childcare (296 cases).

Hispanic or Latino people account for nearly 46%, or 1,182, of the total cases in the county. Another 36% are listed as "not Hispanic or Latino," and the remainder are unknown or under investigation.

The location of four cases is listed as "under investigation," and another eleven are listed as "other," which includes communities with fewer than five cases. The Public Health Department is not identifying those locations.

COVID-19 tests are currently available to the public in Grover Beach, San Luis Obispo, and Atascadero.

The testing clinic in Atascadero will be open through August 20. It will then be moved to Nipomo starting August 24 and remain open Mondays through Thursdays until September 3.
