As the novel coronavirus continues to spread across the state, local courts are making adjustments to their schedules.
It has been confirmed that an attorney who has appeared locally has tested positive for COVID-19.
According to the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court, the court will, "continue all non-time sensitive matters to a later date to minimize the public's potential exposure to COVID-19 during court appearances or jury service," effective Monday, March 16, 2020.
The court consulted with the Public Health Department to ensure the measures being considered by the court for implementation would fit with Public Health's guidance and its efforts to control the further spread of COVID-19.
The Superior Court of Santa Barbara County is also continuing most scheduled matters to a date after April 3, 2020. Those with cases scheduled during that time will receive notification of their rescheduled date.
Many courtrooms will be closed in Santa Barbara County. Only the criminal arraignment and juvenile courtrooms in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara will remain open.
Jurors set to serve on jury duty are asked by the Santa Barbara County Superior Court to report to court to receive direction from the judge presiding over the trial.
The courts say they will continue to monitor this evolving situation and make further operational adjustments as needed.
