San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties released updated vote counts on Monday, securing Republican Jordan Cunningham's lead over Democrat Dawn Addis in the 35th Assembly District race.
On Election Night, initial results showed a very close race between the candidates, but by Monday night, Cunningham led with 55% of the votes to Addis' 45%.
On Tuesday, Cunningham released a statement saying, "I am honored that the voters have elected me to a third term to represent them in the state Assembly - in the highest turnout election in history. I will continue to work hard for them, to solve problems, and to be an independent voice for the Central Coast and the people of California."
Addis posted a statement on her Facebook page Monday night saying, "Votes are still being counted, but it is very likely that this election has not gone our way. I wish Assemblymember Cunningham the very best for the term ahead of him."
According to the San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder's Office, there are 4,927 ballots left to be counted. Santa Barbara County has 6,100 ballots left to count. More than 22,400 votes currently separate the two candidates.
The 35th District represents San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County in Sacramento.
Cunningham has served in the State Assembly since 2016.
