UPDATE: McMillan Fire in Shandon fully contained

UPDATE (4:25 a.m.) – Firefighters fully contained the McMillan fire overnight Thursday.

CAL FIRE says the fire burned 1,764 acres of Highway 46 East.

UPDATE (4:34 p.m.) – CAL FIRE says the McMillan Fire in Shandon is now 95 percent contained.

Updated mapping shows the fire burned 1,764 acres.


 

UPDATE (11:02 a.m.) – CAL FIRE says the McMillan Fire is now 75 percent contained.

Firefighters say the total acreage remains the same, which is around 2,000.

CAL FIRE says firefighters are working on more accurate mapping.

UPDATE (10:45 a.m.) – CAL FIRE says good weather conditions at the McMillan Fire are helping crews complete containment of the fire.


 

UPDATE (8:17 a.m.) – The morning briefing is underway for firefighters on the McMillan Fire in Shandon. There was good news overnight as the fire remains 50% contained. Full containment is expected Thursday evening, according to firefighters on the scene this morning.


 

UPDATE (7:20 a.m.) – Full containment of the McMillan Fire burning in Shandon is expected Thursday night, according to CAL FIRE SLO.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames in check overnight. Acres burned by Thursday morning remained at 2,000 with 50% containment.

Crews are dealing with steep hills, the terrain and canyons while trying to access the fire.

Around 50 personnel are currently assigned to the fire. Air tankers are not expected to be used again Thursday.

A cause has not yet been released.

Highway 46 is back open.

We have the latest on the McMillan fire near Shandon. Full containment is expected by tonight.

ORIGINAL STORY: Firefighters are expected to release updated numbers on the McMillan fire burning in Shandon on Thursday morning.

According to a CAL FIRE Battalion Chief at the scene, 18 firefighters worked overnight to strengthen containment lines and extinguish hot spots. A morning briefing is expected around 7 a.m. Thursday.

On Wednesday evening, CAL FIRE started to release some air tankers and helicopters from the scene as firefighters got a better handle on the fire.

Traffic on Highway 46 East was impacted at one point during the fire. As of 12:14 a.m. Thursday, CHP was working to reopen both east and westbound lanes.

People in surrounding areas can still expect to see smoke in the air Thursday as firefighters continue their attack on the brush fire.
