UPDATE (3:39 p.m.) – CAL FIRE has revised the estimated acreage burned to one acre.
UPDATE (3:24 p.m.) – CAL FIRE reports that the fire has been contained.
Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for another hour.
Both lanes of the highway have been reopened.
UPDATE (2:47 p.m.) – Forward progress of the fire has been stopped at three acres, according to CAL FIRE.
UPDATE (2:39 p.m.) – The northbound lanes of Highway 101 were briefly shut down because of the fire.
The slow lane of the freeway remains closed for fire equipment.
(2:33 p.m.) – Firefighters were responding to a small brush fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon just north of Santa Margarita.
The fire was reported on the right-hand side of the northbound lanes of Highway 101 at about 2 p.m.
CAL FIRE says the fire has burned about 1/4 acre and is spreading slowly, but there are two homes in the area that are threatened.
