Workers rupture gas main in Santa Ynez

Construction workers reportedly struck an underground gas main in Santa Ynez on Wednesday, prompting dozens of people to be evacuated from the area.

It happened at about 10:15 a.m. behind the New Frontiers grocery store on Old Mission Drive.

According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the rupture caused a major gas leak.

Approximately 30 people in the area were evacuated and another 25 people were told to shelter in place.

The gas company was on scene working to turn off the flow of gas and repair the broken line.
