Work will begin next week on a project to improve safety near one of Santa Barbara’s railroad crossings.

Union Pacific will begin installing new sidewalk gates and flashers along with new flashers in the medians at the Lower State Street railroad crossing.

Work begins Nov. 6 and is expected to be completed by Nov. 18.

Officials say drivers may expect some delays in the area during that time.

Early next year, Santa Barbara officials say work will get underway to prevent people from walking on the railroad tracks from the station to State Street.

The project is funded by the Railway-Highway Crossing Program through the California Public Utilities Commission.
