UPDATE (9:05 p.m.) – A woman was killed Tuesday evening in a crash on Highway 46 East near the Shandon Rest Area.

It happened just after 6 p.m.

According to the  California Highway Patrol, the driver of a Toyota Sequoia traveling westbound apparently became confused when he came upon some traffic cones and swerved into the eastbound lanes, causing the vehicle to roll over and ejecting the woman onto the roadway.

The woman, believed to be in her 50s or 60s, died at the scene.

The driver suffered major injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital.

Six other passengers in the vehicle were reportedly taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The California Highway Patrol says officers are investigating whether the crash could be DUI-related. They say when first responders arrived at the scene, the driver was the only person remaining in the vehicle, and when he saw firefighters approaching, he accelerated and the vehicle went down an embankment and hit a sign.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 46 were closed for at least an hour and a half.
