Alvin Elementary School is celebrating its 70th anniversary of service on Thursday.
The Santa Maria grade school opened its doors seven decades ago and it honored the occasion with a school-wide day of festivities.
“This is actually a new event. We haven’t done an event like this in about 15 years, and so I was really happy to help plan this new tradition that we hope to continue for many years,” Alvin Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Gillian Schoenfeld said.
Alvin students from the past or present, staff members and families all joined in to enjoy food and games throughout the afternoon. A slide show of the school’s history was on display for all to see.
Righetti High School’s Ballet Folklorico made a fun performance for the crowd, and live music was played during the event.
The school opened in 1948, and thousands of Santa Maria residents have attended the K-6 school over the years.
