The City of Paso Robles is transitioning to by-district elections for its city council and officials are asking residents to help design the maps for the new districts.

City officials say this decision was driven by a legal challenge that alleges their current election system violates the California Voting Rights Act.

Now, council members will be elected from within geographical districts.

There has already been two community meeting to help design the maps, and one more will take place Tuesday, Dec. 18 at the City Council Chamber at 6 p.m.

Each of the four council districts must have equal population. Demographics and a mapping toolkit will be available for participants who want to submit draft maps.

City officials say that resident input is critical when it comes to drafting the district boundaries.

There will be additional meetings and workshops held in January and February.
