Police have released the name of the 21-year-old man who died after being hit Friday night while reportedly trying to stop a person suspected of driving under the influence in Paso Robles.
Paso Robles police responded to Santa Maria Brewing Co., located at 14th and Park streets, after reports came in at about 10:40 p.m. that a vehicle had hit a pedestrian.
Police say Jose Montesguillen and friends of the suspect reportedly tried to stop her from driving. Montesguillen, of Paso Robles, was thrown from the vehicle and hit the pavement. He suffered major injuries and was hospitalized, but later died from those injuries, according to police.
The suspect, identified as Sarah Hale, 21, of Paso Robles, took off and was located at her home a short time later, according to police. She was arrested and booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit and run but posted bail and was released before the victim died, officials say.
A candlelight vigil for the victim is planned for Saturday, Jan. 5, at Centennial Park in Paso Robles, according to a gofundme account set up by family members.
