UPDATE: Driver in custody after standoff stops traffic on Hwy 101 in Arroyo Grande

UPDATE (12:20 p.m.) – A driver has been taken into custody after a standoff in Arroyo Grande.

Traffic is moving again on Highway 101 northbound.


UPDATE  (12 p.m.) – The Santa Maria Police Department says the standoff in Arroyo Grande started after a pursuit involving a driver believed to be under the influence.

Police were said to be talking with the driver, who was refusing to cooperate.


ORIGINAL STORY: A standoff along Highway 101 in the Arroyo Grande area was backing up traffic Friday morning.

As of 11:30 a.m., several police vehicles could be seen stopped in the northbound lanes near Grand Avenue.

Authorities from the California Highway Patrol and Santa Maria police had guns drawn. A K-9 was also present.

KSBY’s crew on the scene witnessed the red car pulled off to the side of the highway.

Traffic was stopped south of Grand Avenue. The southbound lanes were open but traffic was starting to slow through the area.

It was not immediately known what prompted the standoff.
