Closure reduced for area of Hwy 154 impacted by blocked culvert

A portion of Highway 154 in Santa Barbara County remains closed after last week’s storm blocked a culvert, causing water to flow over the highway.

Caltrans announced Thursday the closure has been reduced and is now from the Lake Cachuma State Recreation Area to Paradise Road.

Caltrans says it has started an emergency project to clear the culvert’s opening, located about 40 feet below the surface. It’s clogged with water and debris.

Pumps and cameras are being used to help open up the culvert.

Lake Cachuma is accessible on the Santa Ynez side of Highway 154 and businesses along the highway remain open.

Highway 101 is a detour.

There is no timeline on when Highway 154 may reopen.
