Highway 1 in Big Sur area to fully re-open Friday

Highway 1 at Mud Creek in the Big Sur area is back open.

The road has been closed since Tuesday ahead of more rain that hit the Central Coast this week.

Caltrans says crews assessed the areas within the closure limits early Friday and have been clearing slide material from the road.

The highway at Mud Creed reopened at noon Friday. The road at Paul’s Slie in Monterey County will re-open at 5 p.m.

Traffic control will be in place at both locations through Saturday.

The re-opening took place earlier than originally anticipated.

Both areas are prone to landslides, so Caltrans has developed a plan that calls for the sections of highway to be closed to traffic during what are forecasted to be significant storms.
