After a special board meeting and unanimous vote, Dr. Helen Benjamin was selected to become the Santa Barbara City College elected interim president.

Dr. Benjamin was hired by Contra Costa Community College District in 1991 and spent 27 years holding a number of positions within the district. She also served as Chancellor of the Contra Costa Community College District during the last 11 years of her tenure with the District.

“I am honored to be selected by the Board to serve in an interim capacity as Superintendent/President of SBCC,” Dr. Benjamin said. “I am inspired by the vision and mission of the college and look forward to working with the Board, employees and the community in fulfilling both.”

According to SBCC, Dr. Benjamin holds a Bachelor of Science in English and Spanish from Bishop College in Texas. Benjamin then went on to receive her master’s and doctoral degrees from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas.

SBCC said the search for a permanent president will have an “extensive public process” that will involve significant input from college stakeholder groups.
