The City of San Luis Obispo has appointed a new fire chief and he’s no stranger to the department.

Keith Aggson will officially take over as chief of the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department on Thursday.

He’s been leading the department since former chief Garrett Olson retired in October.

“I look forward to continuing my fire service career in the City of San Luis Obispo,” Aggson said in a press release. “I am excited for the opportunity to continue to guide the department into the future as our community evolves and grows.”

The new chief has more than 30 years in the fire service industry.

Aggson began his career with the Atascadero City Department, and worked his way up, serving as interim fire chief for the Templeton Community Services District and battalion chief of operations and fire marshal for the Paso Robles Fire Department.

He’s been with the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department since being hired in January 2017 to serve as deputy fire chief.

“The choice to have Keith fill the role is a great step for our community,” said City Manager Derek Johnson. “He’s been an integral part of the department over the last two years and brings a vast knowledge of firefighting expertise from his work with other Central Coast departments. The City will benefit from his leadership, operational expertise, outside experience, and familiarity with the region and City.”

The City says Aggson, who lives in Templeton with his wife, went through a “rigorous evaluation process,” which included serving as interim fire chief.

His annual base salary will be $166,244.
