Pile burning to take place throughout Santa Barbara Co. this month

Pile burning will take place this month in portions of Santa Barbara County.

The Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District says the operation will take place in the Figueroa Mountain area, New Cuyama, Pine Canyon, Figueroa, Los Prietos, San Marcos Stations,
and various campgrounds and consist of getting rid of debris from dead trees and brush in the area.

Burns will begin March 5 and take place on various days throughout the month from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The goal of the series of one-day pile burning is to reduce the risk of wildfire. Prescribed,
or planned, fires typically burn less intensely than wildfires. Prescribed burns can help prevent
the spread of wildfires, and can reduce impacts to watersheds that can result in soil loss and
sedimentation. The burn will be conducted when the meteorological conditions are highly
favorable to direct smoke away from population centers,” according to a press release.

Air Pollution Control Districts in Santa Barbara County and surrounding areas will be monitoring conditions to determine when the burns should take place.
