A memorial has gone up along Highway 101 in Templeton where a 17-year-old student from Paso Robles was hit and killed this week.

The California Highway Patrol says the girl was walking on the right-hand shoulder of northbound Highway 101 Tuesday night near the Las Tables Road off-ramp when, for unknown reasons, she stepped into the slow lane and was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was not arrested and CHP says drugs or alcohol are not suspected as factors.

People have been stopping to place flowers and candles at the scene of the crash.

The Paso Robles Unified School District says the teen was a student within the district.

The district says counselors and support staff are available for students and staff at Paso Robles and Liberty high schools and that counselors and psychologists district-wide have been informed should counseling needs arise at other schools.

Officials have not said which school the girl attended. CHP is not releasing the girl’s name at this time due to her age.
