Work is underway to build the Santa Maria Community Garden.

A groundbreaking was held on Saturday. The new area with be a place for people to lounge, walk their dogs, and enjoy beautiful scenery.

The garden was made possible thanks to the Leadership Santa Maria Valley Team.

Each year, the team works on a project that is accessible to the community. This year, the team chose an open space for people to enjoy.

“I think the community wants a big back yard, this could be a big backyard for a lot of the residents in the area,” Seth McMillan said. “It doesn’t necessarily have to a soccer field, we have a lot of those around, and there’s also maybe a little bit of a slower pace in this type of park, as opposed to other ones.”

McMillan, the lead of the design and installation committee, wants the garden to belong to everyone. The team will be looking for public input.

That concept plan will be handed off to other groups and clubs so more input can be added in the final product.

When the garden is complete, it will be one of the few community gardens in Santa Maria.
