Local students are teaming up for what they call Cultural Friday.

The Santa Maria High School French and Spanish Honor Societies organized the event using a donation from the Fund for Santa Barbara.

The French Society received a grant for $700 to hold a Mardi Gras celebration.

The Spanish Honor Society received about $2,300 for a stress relief event called “Alivio al estrés”.

A third club, Las Comadres Club, also participated with a Mexican-themed booth that featured live music, a piñata, flower-making, and other crafts.

“The main thing is for them to enjoy themselves, to release some stress and basically to have a fun day where they don’t think about all the stress around school activities, homework, exams and all that,” said Mireya Luna, Santa Maria High School Spanish Teacher.

The Fund for Santa Barbara is a non-profit that supports organizations in Santa Barbara County.
