Some local school districts are providing free lunches to students through the Seamless Summer Food Service Program as the school year lets out.

The San Luis Coastal Unified and Lucia Mar Unified school districts will give out the meals to children 18 years and younger at no cost. No enrollment or application is needed to receive the lunches.

The program is to ensure students are receiving the proper nutrition during the summer months when they may be in need of healthy food.

There will be kick-off events at a few local libraries to introduce families to the initiative. The first one will be at the Morro Bay Library on Tuesday, June 11, from 1-3 p.m. The following two will be on Wednesday, June 12, at the San Luis Obispo and Nipomo Libraries. Those events begin at 11 a.m.

There will be free lunch provided, as well as family-friendly activities such as face painting, balloon making and games.

All the events are free to the public.

Parents can text the word ‘FOOD’ for English and ‘COMIDA’ for Spanish to 877-877 to learn where the lunch locations will be throughout the summer.
