The City of Santa Barbara says the use of confetti, sequins, and glitter is on the rise due to recent and upcoming celebrations but wants to remind the public that throwing and leaving it behind is considered a form of littering.
Event organizers, Downtown Santa Barbara, and city staff will continue to work together to clean up after community events, but have difficulty when it comes to picking up all of the confetti.
As a result, the city is now encouraging community members and event organizers to utilize paper confetti, sparingly of course, instead of metallic or plastic confetti.
The city realizes that confetti eggs and cascarones have been part of a standing tradition at Santa Barbara’s Old Spanish Days, but say they have now been witnessing large bags of confetti being dumped on sidewalks, streets and parks.
