The Montecito Fire Department is partnering with the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management and the Carpinteria Summerland Fire Protection District to update the area’s Debris Flow Risk Map.

Montecito Fire says the purpose of the map is to identify properties in the community of Montecito that could possibly be impacted from a catastrophic debris flow.

The newest update will reflect changes that have occurred in Montecito throughout the past year, including watershed re-growth, improved creek channels and debris basins and the positive impact of the recently installed Debris Flow Ring Nets.

“We are hopeful that significantly less community members will be impacted by the updated map,” said Montecito Fire Chief Kevin Taylor.

Scientists will begin gathering data for the map at the end of August 2019. The updated map is expected to be released late October 2019.

The most recent debris flow map was published in October 2018.
