Students in 4-H and FFA are showing their animals at the California Mid-State Fair.

On Friday, the students showed the heifers and steers they’ve raised.

There are showmanship competitions in various age divisions.

One student won first place in his division and the division above his own for his heifer. It was his first time competing with a heifer but he has a herd of eight cows at home.

“I have to wash her every day and then after we wash her we blow dry her,” explained Cash Filipponi, 9-years-old Division 4-H Champ. “Then before every show, I fit her, put lots of show supplies, adhesive and stuff on her.”

Cash says he started learning about cattle when he was three-years-old and he says the key to raising them is lots of water and feed.

The California Mid-State Fair continues through Sunday at the Paso Robles Event Center.
