UPDATE (12 p.m.) – Caltrans has issued a SigAlert to warn drivers of delays in the area of Highway 1 and Constellation Rd. following Friday morning’s fatal crash.
The Santa Barbara County Fire Department reports the crash was the result of a head-on collision.
Witnesses reportedly told the California Highway Patrol that a vehicle headed southbound tried to pass other cars by driving onto the grassy center median. The vehicle lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a white SUV head-on, officers said.
The vehicle then went off the roadway and caught fire. The driver was killed.
The driver of the SUV reportedly suffered critical injuries and was taken to the hospital by helicopter.
A third vehicle was involved but sustained only minor damage.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

UPDATE: CHP says one person has died in the crash. Officers say the location is along Highway 1, north of Constellation Road, which is near Vandenberg Village and outside Lompoc.
No other information was immediately available.
ORIGINAL STORY: A crash on Highway 1 near Allan Hancock’s Lompoc campus reportedly left a person trapped Friday morning.
The California Highway Patrol says it happened at about 11:09 a.m.
Two vehicles were said to be involved.
No other information was immediately available but an ambulance was requested at the scene.
