An American tavern is taking the spot of the former Forden's building in downtown San Luis Obispo.

Renovation work is underway at the location at 857 Monterey Street, which will house Finney's Crafthouse & Kitchen.

The opening is scheduled for Jan. 22.

With locations in Santa Barbara, Ventura and Westlake Village, the business's website describes it as a locally-owned and operated restaurant and bar that brings upscale cooking to casual dining.

Finney's says it uses local and seasonal ingredients as "the soul of our culinary inspired American fire."

Menu items include flatbread pizzas, salads, tacos, sandwiches and burgers.

One dollar of every purchase is donated to Make-A-Wish, according to the Finney's website.

Forden's, a kitchen and fireplace store, announced in 2017 it would be vacating the spot on Monterey Street after nearly eight decades and moving to its warehouse on Sacramento Drive after a developer offered them a deal "they couldn't pass up."

Finney's says it began looking for a location in San Luis Obispo about two years ago and decided on the Monterey Street location about a year ago. Owners say they are family-oriented and "take our food and service very seriously and we're real excited to introduce the concept to such a great community of people," adding they have always been big fans of San Luis Obispo and felt their concept fit really well with the demographics of the community.

More than 70 people were hired for the newest location.
